Description

Calls for Neutrality: A New Divisive Issue in Lebanon Calls for a neutral Lebanon have been made in past years to spare it the repercussions of regional disputes, especially the Arab-Israeli conflict. But such calls have always divided the Lebanese on what position Lebanon should take on the Arab-Israeli conflict. Lebanon is the only Arab country that has for more than four decades borne the brunt of the decades' long Arab-Israeli conflict. Lebanon stayed largely neutral when Arab and Israeli armies fought devastating wars in 1967 and 1973. But the advent of armed Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) guerrillas to Lebanon in the late sixties and later the emergence of the Lebanese militant Hizbullah group have since made this small Mediterranean nation the only active Arab warfront against Israel.
